Panel Capacity Is the Biggest Factor
Every EV charger install starts with the same question: does your existing panel have room for a new dedicated 40–60 amp circuit? If it does, the job is straightforward. If it doesn’t, you’re looking at a panel upgrade first — which changes the scope and cost significantly.
Homes built in the last 10–15 years, or homes that have already had a panel upgrade, usually have capacity to spare. Older homes with a 100-amp panel and several major appliances already running are the ones most likely to need an upgrade alongside the charger.

The further your charger location is from the electrical panel, the more wire, conduit, and labor the job requires. A garage right next to the panel is the cheapest scenario. A detached garage or a driveway on the opposite side of the house from the panel means a longer run — sometimes requiring trenching if it has to go underground.
Mounting Location & Modifications
Where the charger physically mounts matters too. Surface-mounted on an unfinished garage wall is the simplest case. Anything requiring wall modifications, exterior-rated enclosures, or running conduit along finished surfaces adds time and materials.
